The collection includes: Biographical Information, mainly in newspaper clippings (copies); his Cashbooks, 1931-1944; Diaries, 1909-1956; Photographs and Postcards made of photographs; Sermons, 1910-1919; Writings, 1933 and undated; and church-related miscellaneous. The diaries document his years at Acadia University, 1910-1915, in great detail. Other diaries vary in the amount of detail and document his serving as minister of Havelock Baptist Church, 1915-1916, and living in Parma (N.Y.), 1916-1921; Vancouver, 1919; Chicago and Savanna (Ill.), 1919-1924; Oshkosh (Wis.), 1925-1927; St. Paul (Minn.), 1928-1934, Flint (Mich.), 1935-1942, and Mount Pleasant (Mich.), 1942-1956. His correspondence file is mainly brief notes from Central Michigan University (CMU)'s Pres. Charles L. Anspach or CMU Business Manager Norval C. Bovee. The index of his sermons includes a list of baptisms, marriages, and funerals he performed, 1919-1921.

Ryder was born on March 11, 1892 in Boston. He earned an A.B. (1915) from Acadia University, a B.D. from Colgate Divinity School; an A.M. from the Univ. of British Columbia; a Ph. D. from the Univ. of Chicago (1928); and a LL. B. from LaSalle Univ. Ryder was admitted to the Bar in Mich. In 1915 he was ordained a Baptist minister.
